Libelsians Don't Worry About HOTS in UTBK SBMPTN
HOTS was originally known from the concept of Benjamin S. Bloom in a book called Taxonomy of Educational Objectives: The Classification of Educational Goals (1956) which categorizes various levels of thought called Bloom's Taxonomy, from the lowest to the highest. This concept is a learning goal that is divided into three domains, namely Cognitive (mental skills around knowledge), Affective (emotional side around attitudes and feelings), and Psychomotor (physical abilities such as skills).
The concept of taxonomy to determine learning objectives can be called the ultimate goal of a learning process. So, after a certain learning process, students are expected to adopt new skills, knowledge and attitudes. Well, HOTS itself is part of the cognitive realm that exists in Bloom's Taxonomy and aims to hone mental skills around knowledge. Bloom's cognitive domain was later revised by Lorin Anderson, David Karthwohl et al. in 2001. The order was changed to six, namely: Remembering Understanding Apply Analyzing Evaluating Creating Levels 1 to 3 are categorized as low level thinking ability (LOTS), while levels 4 to 6 are categorized as high level thinking ability (HOTS).
In accordance with the provisions, starting in 2019, the requirements to register for 2019 State University Entrance Test (SBMPTN) are required to take the Computer-Based Writing Examination (UTBK). This year, the UTBK held by the College Entrance Test Institute can be done more than 1 (one) time. Participants take a maximum of 2 (two) tests, and test results are given individually 10 (ten) days after the test.
In 2019 SBMPTN, there have been several changes to the examination system. The test material developed in 2019 SBMPTN has changed into two new types namely the Scholastic Potential Test (TPS) and Academic Competency Test (TKA). 2019 SBMPTN questions use HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skill) or questions with high analytical skills. According to Menristekdikti, Mohamad Nasir, the ability of prospective students to analyze is important. Therefore, HOTS questions are expected to make students familiar with questions that require high analytical skills.
According to Muhadjir, HOTS was implemented following the low analytical thinking value in Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) between Indonesia and other countries. So, he said, the national exam and UTBK question standards were raised to catch up. In fact, said the Minister of Education and Culture, HOTS standards have been delivered to schools. Then the teacher learn these standard grids to be taught to students.
Recently, we are as libelsians, know that in every questions of exam will be HOTS and high analytical problems there. Especially at every daily test, we must to understand more the materials, not just memorizing it at short term memory. Evenmore, we took more difficult problems in midterm and final exams. Libelsians have many homeworks to do that is given by some teachers. Time management is the important thing here. We don't just focus on next exams and extracurricular, we also have to finish and collect our assignments before deadline come.
Previous semester, final exam values of students here was excellent. So in my opinion, there will be easy for us to fight for University Entrance Test, namely UTBK, because every day we always be well-prepared planning and organizing what will we get from studying.
"We as participant of UTBK in ITS feel comfortable to this system. About HOTS questions, there are no problem because we have prepared and studied enough," said 12th grade libels student.
According to the Director General of Learning and Student Affairs Kemenristekdikti, Prof. Intan Ahmad, Ph.D., HOTS is a way to test whether someone can analyze, compare, calculate, and so on. "So an unusual ability is needed. Not just to memorize and memorize it," explained Prof. Intan in the SBMPTN LIVE Ruangguru Special on Tuesday, 30 October.
This HOTS model encourages prospective students to do high-level reasoning so that it is not fixated on only one pattern of answers that results from the memorization process, without knowing the concept of knowledge. HOTS is one of the skills demands in 21st century learning, namely critical thinking, creative, collaborative, and communicative. HOTS questions make it possible to create the same type of questions, but with different questions. The Chair of the 2019 SBMPTN Committee and Rector of Sebelas Maret University, Ravik Karsidi, said that this was aimed at attracting high-quality prospective students in accordance with developments in information technology in the digital age. By familiarizing yourself with challenging questions, your self-potential can also be encouraged to further develop.
Menteri Riset, Teknologi, dan Pendidikan Tinggi (Menristekdikti), Mohamad Nasir, in UTBK 2019 selection press conference in the Main Courtroom, Building D Kemenristekdikti (10/22/2018) has confirmed that the 2019 SBMPTN UTBK questions will use HOTS questions (High Order Thinking Skill) or questions with high analytical skills. "The ability of prospective students to analyze is important," Nasir emphasized about the inclusion of HOTS in the 2018 SBMPTN UTBK. The same thing was conveyed by the Head of LTMPT Prof. Ravik Karsidi, "With HOTS questions it is possible to make the same type of questions, but the questions will be different." He said, this was aimed at attracting high-quality prospective students and in accordance with the development of information technology in the digital era.
